My first encounter with Dan Schmahl was at the Charles Mansion in Tallahassee. I was playing a show there that night and showed up a little early. Dan and I introduced ourselves and then he offered me something to eat. We sat in the blanket of warmth, that is the Florida summer, and enjoyed our meal with little conversation. As one who usually twitches with anxiety and awkwardness when there is silence between two people, I was calm and enjoyed the lack of sound and distractions that I often contribute to conversation.
This small moment describes my affection for Schmahls work. His zines are subtle, tasteful and full of an organic presence that removes the need to oversaturate a piece of paper with useless noise. Below are pages from Aura Video Station 5.1. You can pick one up here.
Dan also runs Super Hit Press, which is a small publishing project based out of Tallahassee, FL.
